About Our Technique
Dan's Custom Landscapes cuts grass to 3 to 3 1/2", the height endorsed by Iowa State University's industry-leading turf department. Mowing at this height promotes deeper root development, maintains a cooler soil temperature and reduces most weeds from competing effectively.
ISU also endorses the rule of thirds, which suggests cutting no more than 1/3 of the total blade height in any one cutting. This creates a thicker stand of turf which allows grass to better withstand environmental extremes.
Throughout the year, proper mowing intervals change depending on weather conditions. Our full-season mowing customers can be assured that we will maintain their lawn to its healthiest potential. Grass clippings need not be removed unless clumping occurs or if you want to keep clippings off walks and drives. Clumping shades grass and promotes disease. Short clippings of turf mowed at proper intervals fall down into the grass and decompose quickly; some nutrients are recycled.
