Watering Tips

Most grasses are adapted to summer drought conditions (dormancy) so watering isn't necessary unless continued green is desired (high maintenance). If you start watering during a dry period, you should continue to water throughout the dry period, as it is better for the grass to be dormant as few times as possible to minimize stress and use of stored carbohydrates.

Grass can show signs of water need before irrigation. Infrequent but heavy watering encourages a deeper root system which can draw upon a larger volume of soil for water and nutrients, and then are less prone to drought stress than turfs receiving light, frequent watering. Early morning (4:00-8:00 a.m.) is the best time because wind and evaporative losses are low and distribution efficiency is greatest. Early evening and night watering should be avoided because leaf surfaces remain wet longer; these conditions favor growth of many turfgrass diseases.
